Graduate Dean's Fellowship

Graduate Dean's Fellowship

These prestigious multi-year fellowships are offered by the FSU Office of Graduate Studies to recruit an outstanding and diverse group of new graduate students to Florida State University. The award is to be used in conjunction with a departmental/college teaching or research assistantship. The Graduate Dean's Fellowship will be provided for a maximum of four years for a doctoral student and two years for a master's student and the departmental/college assistantship must be maintained at least at the initial amount offered. The department/college must provide the tuition waiver and the student must be enrolled for a minimum of nine hours each semester. Recipients will be required to participate in the Professional Development Workshop series sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies.

Eligibility:

Students currently or previously enrolled in graduate study at FSU are not eligible. FSU undergraduates who meet the criteria are eligible.

Nomination:

Complete nomination packets (all materials) should be sent to the attention of Ms. Donna Wieckowicz, Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies (Westcott 408) by the Department Chair or College Dean as appropriate and include the following information:

  • Letter of Justification from Department Chair or College Dean (if the college is not divided into departments) that addresses the exceptional nature of the nominee and indicates why the offer of a department/college assistantship is insufficient to attract the nominee to Florida State University. The letter should also specify the amount being requested with appropriate justification (see Details last two bullets).
  • Letter from the Chair needs to include the Dean's signature acknowledging support of the request.
  • A copy of the student's complete application (university and departmental portions) to graduate school.

Deadline:

Nominations will be considered throughout the year and a response will be provided in a timely manner. Decisions will be based on the exceptional nature of the request and how it contributes to the mission and goals of Florida State University.

Details:

  • Nominations must be submitted through the department and/or college (if not subdivided into departments). Units with fewer than 100 enrolled full-time graduate students are limited to one nomination per calendar year. Units exceeding that threshold can submit two nominations.
  • The departmental/college assistantship offer must be at a level that meets or exceeds the median for the discipline nationally and be no less than the median for students in the program at FSU. Reliable national benchmark data (e.g. OSU survey of graduate student stipends; data from professional societies) should be referenced in the justification letter.
  • The maximum amount that can be requested is 35% of the assistantship value up to a maximum supplement of $6000.
