University Fellowships

The 2008-09 University Fellowship competition is now closed. Please check back in fall 2008 for information on next year's competition.

The University Fellowship Program is administered by the Office of Graduate Studies. It is a University-wide competition, open to new and continuing graduate students. The University Fellowship provides a stipend of $18,000 to each student plus a tuition waiver of up to twelve hours for the Fall and Spring terms.

Some University Fellowships are designated Presidential University Fellowships and are awarded to newly enrolling graduate students at FSU who must be in a Ph.D. program or a Ph.D. track. These awards are multi-year and provide a stipend of $23,000 for the first and fourth years each, plus a tuition waiver of up to twelve hours for the Fall and Spring terms, funded by the Office of Graduate Studies. The second and third year stipends and tuition waivers are funded by the department at award levels determined by the sponsoring department.

Both the Presidential and University Fellowship carry a health insurance supplement ($1,440 per student per academic year) towards the purchase of the university-sponsored student health insurance plan.

College Teaching Fellowships

The competitive College Teaching Fellowships are awarded annually by the University, to new graduate students. While these are administered by the Office of Graduate Studies, a specific number of Teaching Fellowships are awarded competitively by each school and college. The base stipend is $6,300, though some colleges and departments supplement this award. Each college or department decides what duties will be required from the fellow. Depending on the duties, nine to twelve hours of graduate tuition will be waived.

Information about these fellowships is available through the department, college or school.

College or Departmental Fellowships

There are numerous college and departmental fellowships available at the University. Those interested should contact in their academic department or program.

Association for Institutional Research Fellowships (AIR)

The Association for Institutional Research as part of its contract to improve the quality of institutional research in U.S. postsecondary education systems and hence, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), announces a new national graduate fellowship program funded by the National Center for Education statistics (NCES). The fellowships are for graduate study advancing or leading to careers in institutional research, thereby increasing the national level of expertise of institutional research officers and the data that they produce. Specific program goals are to have more people better trained in IR and completing advance degrees.

Fellowships will be awarded for credit-bearing graduate study at various degree levels, with different levels of funding. The annual mix of proposals will determine how many of each will be awarded. Full-time doctoral students: maximum $30,000 over a three-year period ($10,000 per year). No full-time awards will be made to first-time graduate students with no IR work experience. Part-time graduate students: maximum $9,000 over three-year period ($3,000 per year). Part-time students could move to full-time and apply for an increased award. Part-time awardees may re-compete at the end of the three-year period.
